Breathing
by: Dental Assistant Team

Breathing is something we do 24/7 and we tend to take it for granted. When is the last time you put your nose in a bunch of fresh cut roses and felt that sweet smell of nature, or simply took a deep breath on a beautiful sunny day?

Proper breathing has an array of benefits, beside the obvious: keeping us alive. Breathing is a major component in many relaxation techniques. If you practice yoga (any kind of yoga) or meditate, breathing is the focal point.

Breathing has a calming effect, and deep breaths are great to relax the mind and actually are believed by some to help eliminate toxins in our bodies. As we take deep breaths our bodies release endorphins, the "happy hormone" you hear often about. Deep breathing helps reduce anxiety, helps our mind to slow down, and also promotes good flow throughout the body giving that sense of well being.

Breathing properly can reduce stress and help you sleep better and relax in stressful situation. We seem to breath faster when stressed, getting more agitated because we obstruct the air flow to our lungs.

Here are a couple of breathing exercises I use in my daily life: stand up straight and open your rib cage, it allows your lungs to inhale much more air, take a few slow deep breaths through your nose and exhale very deeply to get rid of all the air. Slow down and repeat these simple steps throughout the day, and don't forget to smell the roses!
