Why Do I Need A Yearly Oral Cancer Screening?

The Importance Of Yearly Oral Cancer Screening
Let’s face it… none of us like to hear the “C” word, but I wanted to bring up the subject because even in Dentistry we can detect it… and we encourage our patients to be checked every year. Oral cancer is highly treatable, and early detection can save your life!
Oral cancer screening consists of a detailed visual examination. During this test you can expect to have your lips, soft palate, hard palate, buccal mucosa, oral pharynx, and the floor of your mouth examined.
For those who want a more thorough screening, we also offer ViziLite screening. ViziLite® is used to help us identify, evaluate, monitor and mark abnormal oral cell lesions suspicious for pathology including precancerous and cancerous cells that may be difficult to see during a regular visual exam. This test is non invasive, takes just a few minutes, and can be done in our office at any time.
If any detected we recommend a brush biopsy, which can also can be during the same visit in a matter of seconds. If any suspicious spots are found, we will refer you to an oral surgeon.
Again, we strongly encourage all of our patients to have an oral cancer screening each year. If it’s been more than a year since your last oral cancer screening, click here to contact us and schedule an appointment, today!
