Aromatherapy in our dental practice
by: Dental Assistant Team
We have all heard of Aromatherapy and essential oils, but what is it exactly?
Aromatherapy is the practice of using the natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance psychological and physical well-being.
The inhaled aroma from these "essential" oils is widely believed to stimulate brain function. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole-body healing.
When I joined Drs Rohrer's team a few years back, I had heard of Essential oils but never really explored the science behind them. Having always loved good smells and ambient scents, I took advantage of the great knowledge Dr Joy and Catherine, our hygienist, have of aromatherapy to learn more on the subject. They continue to share with me their knowledge and that there is so much more to Oils and Aromatherapy than just good scents...
I am now using Oils in many different ways, at home and at work. Diffused, simply for the great scent, or to shake a cold, sore a throat, or to stop the crazy itchiness from an insect bite. I also sometimes use Oils as part of a meditation routine, as theses magnificent magic oils make a great addition to your meditation time.
Dr Joy spent a great time studying Oils and has gone to great lengths to better her knowledge about these powerful and interesting oils, and all they have to offer in the areas of healing, preventing deceases, alleviating various symptoms, certain types of infections and more; or simply be used as fragrance.
Catherine, our dental hygienist, uses oils such as Lemon, Peppermint, Lavender, Peace and another of my favorite: Valor, a mixed of different oils that have grounding properties. With help of Oils, Catherine turns your dental cleaning into a relaxation session that will make you want to have your teeth cleaned on a regular basis.
We use different Oils such as Clove or Thieves that are antimicrobial and have disinfectant properties that we spay mildly into our office, so it smells clean and the air we share is disinfected at the same time.
One effective scent is lavender, one of my personal daily wear. Lavender seems to have a calming effect on people, helping soothe them so that they are more relaxed during treatments that require injections. Our goal is to take our patients' minds off of the fact that they are having dental work done. We diffuse it mildly in our operatories, so that it does not overpower the room.
We also offer an eye pillow if you like, wrapped in a cloth and soft tissue where we can apply a few drops of oils, enhancing a peaceful, calming and relaxed feeling during your care.
Aromatherapy can work wonders on how we feel, which is why it can be so wonderful to use within the environment of a dentist's office; and as you can see, we use them in many various ways.
